Hamza Chowdhury’s Sheffield Tipped for Premier League Return

Hamza Chowdhury's Sheffield Tipped for Premier League Return

Hamza Chowdhury’s Sheffield United were well on course for a return to the Premier League, spending 143 days in the top two of the English Championship second only to champions Leeds United, who spent 155 days.

However, Sheffield’s form dipped at a crucial time. Three consecutive defeats saw them drop to third place, missing out on automatic promotion. Burnley and Leeds United claimed the two direct spots for the next Premier League season.

Still, hope remains alive for Hamza Chowdhury and his team. The Championship play-offs begin tonight. If Sheffield can win two semi-final legs and the final, they will secure promotion. Encouragingly, football statistics website Opta’s supercomputer predicts Sheffield United as strong contenders to reach the Premier League.

Sheffield United’s path back to the Premier League begins with a tough test against Bristol City, a club that has never featured in the top flight since the Premier League’s inception in 1992. The first leg will be played at Bristol’s home ground, followed by the return leg at Sheffield.

According to Opta’s supercomputer, Sheffield United have a 61% chance of advancing to the Championship final after overcoming Bristol City. From the other semi-final, Coventry City coached by Frank Lampard are favored, with a 54% chance of making the final.

Opta also gives Sheffield a 36% chance of winning the Championship play-offs and securing promotion. Coventry follows with 26.1%, while Bristol City and Sunderland trail with 19.6% and 19.3% respectively.

Despite the favorable odds, history isn’t on Sheffield’s side. They have participated in the play-offs five times but have never succeeded in winning promotion through them. Notably, they hold the record for most final defeats three in total.

However, there’s reason for optimism. Nine clubs that finished in the top three before entering the play-offs have gone on to win promotion. Hamza Chowdhury and Sheffield United will learn their fate on May 24, the day of the Championship play-off final.
