Bangladesh Clinch Historic T20I Series Win Over Pakistan in Mirpur Thriller

In the second T20I held in Mirpur, Bangladesh, after losing the toss, were asked to bat and posted a modest total of 133 runs in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Pakistan were bowled out for 125 runs in 19 overs, falling short by 8 runs.

Needing 13 runs in the final over with just one wicket in hand, Pakistan seemed to have a glimmer of hope. Daniel Ahmed struck a boundary off the first ball of Mustafizur Rahman’s over, narrowing the equation. But on the very next delivery, he mistimed a shot straight to Shamim at midwicket. Bangladesh sealed a thrilling 8-run victory, registering their first-ever multi-match T20I series win against Pakistan.

Captain Liton Das again trusted Sheikh Mehedi Hasan with the new ball, and the spinner repaid the faith. His tidy first over yielded a key breakthrough Saim Ayub was run out off the last ball. Liton opted for spin at one end and pace from the other, handing the ball to Shariful Islam, who dismissed Mohammad Haris lbw in the very next over. Fakhar Zaman, too, didn’t last long, falling for 8 off 8 balls, caught by Liton off Shariful.

Bangladesh won by 8 runs

The Pakistani innings crumbled under early pressure. Tanzim Hasan Sakib, brought into the attack in the fifth over, struck twice in two balls removing Hasan Nawaz caught behind and then bowling Mohammad Nawaz for a golden duck. At this stage, Pakistan were reeling at 15 for 5.

Though Salman Ali Agha tried to stabilize the innings, his slow 9 off 23 balls only added to the pressure. Mehedi returned to dismiss him in the 10th over. Khushdil Shah followed shortly after.

Then came a crucial 41-run partnership between Faheem Ashraf and Abbas Afridi for the eighth wicket, offering Pakistan a lifeline. Abbas scored 19 off 13 before getting out, but Faheem continued the resistance with a fine 51 off 32 balls. His dismissal in the 19th over ended Pakistan’s hopes.

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh’s innings started shakily. Naeem Sheikh, replacing in-form Tanzid Hasan Tamim, scored just 3 before getting caught behind while attempting a scoop off Faheem Ashraf. Liton Das, coming in at No. 3, tried to counterattack but perished while going for a big shot off Salman Mirza.

Towhid Hridoy was run out without facing a ball due to a mix-up with Parvez Hossain Emon, who himself managed only 13 off 14 before being dismissed.

With the score at 28 for 4, Sheikh Mehedi and Zaker Ali steadied the ship with a valuable 53-run partnership. Mehedi played a brisk knock of 33 off 25 balls, silencing critics of his slow scoring.

Though Shamim Hossain, Tanzim Sakib, and Rishad Hossain fell cheaply, Zaker Ali held one end and reached his half-century off 46 balls, eventually scoring 55 off 48 balls, anchoring Bangladesh to a defendable total of 133.

This memorable win not only sealed the match but also marked a significant milestone Bangladesh’s first T20I series win against Pakistan in a multi-match format.
